APPOINTMENTS

  • Ramachandran is new president of IOA- Indian Olympic Association.

  • BCCI President N. Srinivasan will be the new Chairman of the International Cricket Council from July onwards for a period of two years.

  • Microsoft's appointment of John Thompson as chairman to replace co-founder Bill Gates, the world's largest software maker is looking to the veteran technology executive as the main outside voice in its new leadership structure. The new chairman is only Microsoft's second since the company was founded by Gates and Paul Allen in 1975.

  • WWF, a global conservation organisation, announced the appointment of Marco Lambertini as director-general of WWF International.

  • Microsoft appoints India-born Satya Nadella as CEO.

  • M Teresa Kho took over as the new country director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) succeeding Hun Kim who moved on to become deputy director general of ADB’s South Asia Department in Manila.

  • Harish Rawat will be the new Chief Minister of Uttrarakhan. He has been elected leader of the state Congress Legislative Party at its meeting in Dehradun .

  • Janet Yellen, the first woman to chair the Federal Reserve in its 100-year history, had take over the reins of the US central bank and formally be sworn in next week, the Fed.

  • Reliance Communications (RCom) has appointed Vinod Sawhny as its CEO, making him responsible for the Anil Ambani-led company’s entire operations spread across wireless, enterprise and Reliance Globalcom.

  • Yahoo India has appointed Gurmit Singh as Managing Director, overseeing the Internet major’s business in the country. He will report to Yvonne Chang, Vice-President & Head of India and South-East Asia at Yahoo.

  • The Centre has appointed Jatinder Bir Singh, an IAS officer, as Chairman & Managing Director of Punjab & Sind Bank.

  • R.K.Tiwari was appointed as the new chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on 9 February 2014.

  • Indian-origin Ashok Varadhan has been appointed co-head of the Goldman Sachs’ securities division, the largest and most profitable of the global investment bank’s four units.

  • Crisil has appointed Vinita Bali as an additional director on its board. She will be an independent, non-executive director.

  • Dinesh Sarraf appointed as next Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on 26 February 2014.

  • Cheteshwar Pujara, the middle order batsman of Indian cricket team on 20 February 2014 was appointed as the brand ambassador of the Gujarat State Election Commission.

  • Lakshmi Swaminathan has been elected president of Administrative Tribunal of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for three years.

  • The Centre has appointed Yaduvendra Mathur as Chairman and Managing Director of Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) on deputation for three years.

  • PNB MetLife has appointed Tarun Chugh, as its Managing Director post receiving all regulatory approvals. In this role, Tarun will oversee all of MetLife’s life insurance business in India and will continue to drive its growth in the country. Tarun will be a part of MetLife’s Asia leadership team and will report to MetLife’s President of Asia, Christopher Townsend and to the PNB MetLife Board.

  • Ukraine MPs appoint interim president as Yanukovych allies dismissed.

  • Rejecting Oil Minister M. Veerappa Moily’s proposal to give Sudhir Vasudeva a post-retirement extension, Dinesh K. Sarraf was on 27 Jan appointed the new head of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, the nation’s most profitable firm.

RESIGNATIONS/RETIREMENTS

  • The interim Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi on 24 February 2014 announced resignation of his government after a Cabinet meeting that was also attended by Field Marshal Abdul Fattah al-Sisi. This resignation was accepted by Adly Mansour, the interim President.

  • Rishang Keishing the oldest Parliamentarian of India decided to retire on 21 February 2014. He is 94

OBITUARIES

  • Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his New York apartment , a law enforcement official said. He was 46.

  • Tom Finney, the great footballer died at the age of 91 on 14 February 2014. In the English game, he was rivaled by Bobby Charlton and Staneley Matthews. He is nicknamed as the Preston Plumber. Between 1946 and 1960, Finney made appearance in more than 400 leagues for Preston North End and won 76 caps for England.

  • Janamaddhi Hanamachhaastri, the renowned Telugu writer died on 28 February 2014 in Kapada town of Andhra Pradesh. He was 90.

  • Sid Caesar a great TV comedian died at 91 on 14 February 2014.

  • Prokash Karmakar, an eminent painter died on 24 February 2014 following age-related illness. He was 81. His paintings reflected the degenerating society and the confusion that prevails in modern India.

  • Meghalaya’s oldest voter and the first Padma Shri awardee from the State, Silverine Swer, passed away at the age of 103 at her residence in the city after a brief illness.

  • Senior CPI leader and four-time MP Parvati Krishnan, who was in the forefront of trade union movement in the country, died in Coimbatore. She was 94 and is survived by daughter Indirani, a doctor, residing in the US.

  • Renowned filmmaker Balu Mahendra died here at a private hospital following a cardiac arrest, sources close to his family.

  • Legendary Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucia passed away in Mexico on 26 February 2014. He was 66.

  • The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, presented Krishi Karman Awards for the year 2012-13 on 10 February 2014. The awards were presented during inaugural function of World Congress on Agro-Forestry (WCA-2014) held in New Delhi.

  • Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai has been nominated for the World Children’s Prize in Sweden for her crusade for education rights for girls.

  • President Pranab Mukherjee got the Rotary's highest award for his leadership in the country's victory over polio.

  • Dainik Jagran’s Bharat Gupta conferred with ‘Youth Achievers Award’.

  • Tendulkar, Sehwag nominated for 'Cricketer of the Generation' award.

  • Vishwanath Tripathi, the eminent Hindi writer has been selected for the prestigious Vyas Samman for the year 2013. He has been chosen for his memoir 'Vyomkesh Darvesh' that is a biography of the noted Hindi scholar Acharya Hazari Prasad Dwivedi.

  • The Akshaya Patra Foundation has been awarded the Gold Shield and Hall of Fame by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the year 2012-13.

  • Somdev Devvarman crashed out of the singles event of the Dubai Duty Free Championships after a straight set defeat against Malek Jaziri in the second round.

  • Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo, tennis superstar Rafael Nadal and basketball player Le Bron James are among the nominees to be 2014 Laureus World Sports Awards Sportsman of the Year, organisers said.

  • Sourav Kothari won the National Billiard Championships held in Lucknow on 26 February 2014. He beat Alok Kumar by 5-3. This is the first maiden title for Saurav Kothari since he turned professional in 2007.

  • Abhinav Bindra, the Indian shooter on 8 February 2014 won his third gold-medal in the Inter-Shoot Tri-series Shooting in the Air Pistol event. With this, he became the first person to win three gold medals in the event that is being held at the Hague, Netherlands.

  • Yulia Lipnitskaya became the youngest ever Winter Olympic gold medalist at just 15, taking the podium with Russia's figure skaters in the team competition.

  • Ishant Sharma exploited the seaming conditions to return with a career—best six for 51 as India took early control of the second and final cricket Test by skittling out New Zealand for a paltry 192 in the first innings, in Wellington.

  • World Bridge Championship for Bermuda Bowl (men) and Venice Cup (women) will be hosted by India for the first time in October 2015. This was announced by the World Bridge Federation (WBF) on 17 February 2014.

  • Li Na of China was ranked World Number 2 in the latest Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles ranking released on 17 February 2014. Li Na became the first Asian player, Male or Female, to hold the WTA World No. 2 singles ranking.

  • Peng Shuai of China was ranked World Number 1 in the latest Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Doubles ranking released on 17 February 2014. Peng Shuai is the first Chinese player to ascend to the top of the WTA's doubles ranking.

  • Badminton teen sensation P V Sindhu improved one more place to close the gap with ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal in the latest world ranking released in Kuala Lumpur

  • Somdev Devvarman lifted his third ATP Challenge title as he outclassed top seed Aleksandr Nedovyesov 6-3, 6-1 in the final of the ONGC-GAIL Delhi Open.

  • Kohli, who made 214 runs in four innings in New Zealand, jumped a place to eighth with 784 ranking points.

  • Nadal, Serena retain top spot in rankings.Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams maintained their hold on the top spot in the ATP and WTA rankings which were released.
