APPOINTMENTS

  • The Supreme Court of India on 29 April 2014 appointed former judge of the High Court of Australia, Michael Hudson McHugh as the third arbitrator to resolve the dispute between the Central government and Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) on KG basin.

Maxine Stiles, 29, Alexandra Olsson, 26, and Penny Thackray, 39, joined the Vanguard-class nuclear submarine HMS Vigilant for months of tough training.

  • The Board of Directors of Kasturi and Sons Limited (KSL), publishers of The Hindu and Group newspapers, has unanimously appointed Rajiv C. Lochan, 43, as Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer effective June 1, 2014. He will lead all non-editorial operations of the company and will join the Board of Directors of KSL.

  • Quantum Storage India has appointed Sanjay Hasija as the country head for India & SAARC.

  • Thailand’s caretaker Cabinet has appointed a new acting Prime Minister after a court removed Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra from office. Shortly after the ruling, her remaining Cabinet announced that Deputy Prime Minister Niwatthamrong Boonsongpaisan would become the interim leader.

  • New York Times names new executive editor. Managing editor Dean Baquet named as the new executive editor after Jill Abramson stepped down from the top position unexpectedly. Ms. Abramson, who took over as executive editor in 2011, was the first woman to hold the paper’s top position. The reason for her resignation is unknown.

  • The International Technology Law Association on 14 May 2014 appointed Sajai singh as the President. Sajai Singh is the first President from the Asia-Pacific region of the world.

  • Grant Flower, the former Zimbabwe batsman on 15 May 2014 was named as the batting coach of Pakistan cricket team for two years. He will join the Pakistan side on 1 August 2014 just before the Sri Lanka series of the team.

  • Justice BS Chauhan, the Judge of the Supreme Court of India on was appointed as the Chairman of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT). Justice Chauhan will succeed Justice NP Singh.

  • The Board of Directors of Reliance Industries Limited has recommended the appointment of Smt. Nita M. Ambani, the Chairperson of Reliance Foundation as a Director on the Board of Reliance Industries Limited. She is being nominated to the Board in place of Shri Ramnik H. Ambani, who is retiring at the age of 90 years.

  • NCC Ltd has informed the BSE that the board of directors of the company accepted the resignation of Akhil Gupta and approved the appointment of Amit Dixit as nominee director of Blackstone on the company's board.

  • PayPal's Rakesh Agrawal leaves after snide tweets. PayPal, the payment processing arm of eBay Inc, said   that it parted ways with a recently hired strategy executive after he posted a series of disparaging and at times indecipherable tweets.

  • Prime Minister of Slovenia, Alenka Bratusek resigned on 5 May 2014 and urged for early elections in the country. Alenka Bratusek handed her resignation to the speaker of Parliament and announced her resignation. Bratusek was the first women Prime Minister of Slovenia and occupied the post of PM on 23 March 2013. Slovenia is member of European Union (EU) and she steered the country through EU debt crisis.

  • Walter R Walsh, an FBI sharpshooter who was the world’s oldest living Olympian, has died. He was 106.

  • Heritage Foods Ltd has informed the BSE about the sudden demise of A Appa Rao, non-executive independent director of the company, on April 30, 2014.

  • Writer, model and TV presenter Peaches Geldof , daughter of musician Bob Geldof, died of heroin overdose — the same drug that killed her mother.

  • Former British number one Elena Baltacha has died of liver cancer at the age of 30.

  • Former British No 1 tennis player, Elena Baltacha died on 4 May 2014 due to liver cancer at the age of 30. She was diagnosed of liver cancer in January 2014.

  • Nedurumilli Janardhan Reddy, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh died in Hyderabad on 9 May 2014. Till his death, Reddy was a sitting Rajya Sabha member from Andhra Pradesh. He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 2009.

  • Oscar winning Swedish film director, Malik Bendjelloul died in Stockholm on 13 May 2014. He was 36.

  • Veteran Congress leader and former minister Sitaram Prasad passed away at a private hospital.

  • Indologist and Sanskrit scholar Sukumari Bhattacharji who had equal grasp over English and Sanskrit language died on 24 May 2014. She was 92.

  • Four Indians are among the winners of a Harvard Business School competition that awards prizes worth over $3,00,000 to new and innovative business and social impact startups conceptualized by the US institution's students and alumni.

  • President Pranab Mukherjee Friday conferred three Kirti Chakras and nine Shaurya Chakras on armed forces personnel for displaying "conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage and extreme devotion" to duty at a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The president also presented three Uttam Yudh Seva Medals for a high degree of distinguished service in an operational context which includes times of war, conflict, or hostilities. 13 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, four Bar to Ati Vishisht Seva Medals and 23 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals upon senior officers of the armed forces for distinguished service of an exceptional order. The recipients of Kirti Chakras are Constable Bhrigu Nandan Choudhary (posthumous), Constable Lohit Sonowal (posthumous) and Naib Subedar Bhupal Singh Chhantel Magar.

  • A documentary film, Silent Screams – India’s Fight Against Rape directed by Pria Somiah on 9 May 2014 won three awards at the 2014 New York Festivals International TV and Film Awards. The awards included - Gold World Medal for 'Best Investigative Report', Two Bronze Gold Medals each in the Current Affairs and Human Concerns sections respectively, The film is about politics of rape in India and was written by Manira A Pinto. The documentary was produced by Miditech for Channel NewsAsia.

  • Two Indian firms won the Ashden award (the green energy award) in 2014. About 14 Ashden awards were presented at the Royal Geographical Society in London. Infosys received the International Ashden Award for Sustainable Buildings. Another Indian firm Greenway Grameen won the Ashden Clean Energy for Women and Girls award.

  • The Vice President of India Shri Hamid Ansari on 29 May 2014 presented the Malti Devi Gyan Peeth Puraskar-2014. The award was given to fifteen outstanding teachers from girls higher secondary schools in Punjab.

  • Martin Kilzan on 4 May 2014 won the Munich ATP tournament to claim second title of his career. In the final match, he defeated Fabio Fognini 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

  • Mark Selby's thrilling 18-14 win over Ronnie O'Sullivan in the world snooker final was watched by a peak of more than 5 million viewers, delivering the tournament's biggest audience on BBC2 for years.

  • Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli takes the top spot as the most searched IPL player this season, closely followed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

  • Waqar Younis back as Pakistan coach .The Pakistan Cricket Board has given cricket great Waqar Younis a second shot as coach of the national team. Younis was the coach for 18 months until after leading the team to the 2011 World Cup semi-finals. He resigned for personal reasons.

  • Mark Selby of England won the World Snooker Championship 2014 in Sheffield, England on 6 May 2014. He won the title against the defending champion Ronnie O Sullivan with 18-14 in the final. This is his first World title and he was runner-up in 2007. With this win he was ranked world no 1 in the Snooker.

  • Virat Kohli was ranked no 1 in ICC list of One Day International (ODI) rankings released in Dubai on 4 May 2014. He remained on the top rank in batsmen list with 881 points and is followed by the AB de Villiers with 872 points.

  • Hockey India recommends four players for Arjuna Award. Players recommended: Arjuna award: Dharamvir Singh, V.R. Raghunath, Tushar Khandker, Bharat Chetri; Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award: Sumrai Tete (national women’s team coach); Dronacharya Award: Romesh Pathania (junior women’s team coach).

  • Vikas Gowda wins silver at the IAAF Diamond League in Doha.

  • Rafael Nadal won his fourth title at the Madrid Mutual Open as he defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori 2-6, 6-4, 3-0 in a match his opponent was forced to abandon due to an injury in the final set.

  • Maria Sharapova defeated Simona Halep to win Madrid Open title.

  • World No. 1 Rafael Nadal on 11 May 2014 won his 27th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title at Mutua Madrid Tennis Open final. He won after Kei Nishikori of Japan was forced to withdraw with a back injury when was trailing 2-6, 6-4, 3-0 in the final set.

  • Indian-American student Akhil Rekulapelli on 21 May 2014 won the National Geographic Bee championship in Washington, USA.

  • Real Madrid on 24 May 2014 defeated Atletico Madrid 4-1 at Lisbon to win their 10th UEFA Champions League Football title and first since 2002.

  • Japan won the AFC Women's Asian Football Cup 2014 on 25 May 2014. In the final held in Vietnam, Japan football team defeated defending champion Australia 1-0. This is Japan’s first-ever AFC Women’s Asian Cup since it started competing in the event in 1977.

  • Master Blaster calls his football franchise as Kerala Blasters. Kerala Blasters – this is the name that the Master Blaster has chosen for the Kochi franchise of the Indian Football Super League that he co-owns.

  • Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg of Germany on 25 May 2014 won Monaco Grand Prix of Formula One. This was his second victory of the season and fifth of his career.

  • The Men's and Women's Hockey World Cup begin in The Hague.

  • A book entitled A Stamp is Born authored by C. R. Pakrashi was released on 6 May 2014 by Vice President of India, M Hamid Ansari. The book gives a graphic account of history and evolution of postage stamps.

  • A book My Years with Rajiv and Sonia written by R.D.Pradhan released on 27 March 2014. R.D.Pradhan has penned his work experiences with Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi in his book.

  • Arunendra Kumar, the Chairman of Railway Board on 9 May 2014 released a book entitled India Junction – A Window to the Nation. The book has been brought out by Public Relations Directorate Railway Board.

  • A book Post Haste: Quintessential India written by B.G. Verghese was released on 1 May 2014 at India International Centre in Delhi.

  • The Book entitled Anticipating India - The Best of National Interest written by Shekhar Gupta, the editor-in-chief of The Indian Express was released on 24 May 2014.
