APPOINTMENTS



  • Nishi Vasudeva became the first woman to head a blue-chip PSU when she took over as the Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL).

  • Dinesh K Sarraf has taken over as Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC, consequent to superannuation of Sudhir Vasudeva.

  • Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh was on appointed the vice president of Bharatiya Janata Party. BJP president Rajnath Singh made the appointment.

  • Second largest low-cost carrier SpiceJet Ltd appointed R Neelakantan as its chief financial officer, marking his second coming to the Chennai-based airline, and also appointed four senior vice presidents. Neelakantan, who had served as CFO from November 2010 to February 2013, is returning to the role after serving as the internal audit head at the parent Sun Group.

  • SpiceJet appointed R.Neelakantan as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) on 4 March 2014. He will replace Sam Isaac.

  • Sheila Dikshit, the former chief minister of Delhi on 4 March 2014 was appointed as the 22nd Governor of Kerala. She will succeed Nikhil Kumar, a former Delhi Police Commissioner who took over as the governor of Kerala in March 2013. Nikhil Kumar had tendered his resignation to the President of India that has been accepted.

  • Tom Albanese is new Vedanta CEO.

  • Shyamal Acharya back at SBI as management audit head.

  • Rakesh Sharma has taken over as MD and CEO of Lakshmi Vilas Bank. This follows the demitting of office of the interim MD and CEO KSR Anjaneyulu.

  • Tom Albanese is appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Vedanta Resources on 6 March 2014. Tom will take over as the charges of CEO and join the Vedanta board with effect from 1 April 2014.

  • Sheila Dikshit, the former Chief Minister of Delhi on 11 March 2014 took oath as the Governor of Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram. The oath was administered to her by the Kerala High Court’s Chief Justice Dr Manjula Chellur. She was appointed at the post of the state’s governor on 4 March 2014.

  • Michelle Bachelet was sworn-in as the President of Chile in Valparaiso. The 62-year old Michelle, the socialist leader took the oath of the office on 11 March 2014. She succeeded the conservative President Sebastian Piner

  • Canara Bank has named cricketer Shikhar Dhawan as its new brand ambassador.

  • PC Parida taken  charge as Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) Prior to this, he was Deputy Chairman of Chennai Port Trust since January 2011. He also worked as Deputy Chairman of Mormugao Port Trust from November 2008 to December 2010.

  • Saugata Gupta chief executive officer (CEO) of Marico on 25 March 2014 was promoted as Managing Director (MD). Harsh Mariwala will step down from the post of MD and will remain Chairman of the company.

  • Varun Berry on 25 March 2014 appointed as Managing Director (MD) of Britannia Industries. He will succeed Vinita Bali.  Currently, he is working as chief operating officer (COO) of the company.

  • Gavaskar to be interim BCCI chief, IPL matches as scheduled: Apex court.

  • General Sedki Sobhi sworn-in as Defence Minister and Army Chief of Egypt.

  • Jens Stoltenberg was appointed as the Secretary General of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). This was announced by the North Atlantic Council in Brussels in Belgium on 28 March 2014. Besides, he was also appointed as the Chairman of the North Atlantic Council.

  • Abdullah, the king of Saudi Arabia on 27 March 2014 appointed his half-brother Moqren (69) as the next heir to the throne. This step has paved a way for Moqren to become a future king of the world’s largest exporter of crude oil.

  • Aircarft maker Airbus, said it had appointed Srinivasan Dwarakanath as Airbus India CEO and Charles Champion, who is EVP Airbus Engineering and member of the company’s Executive Committee, as Chairman.

  • Rajiv Takru, an IAS officer of 1979 batch of Gujarat cadre was appointed as the Revenue Secretary on 25 March 2014. He will succeed Sumit Bose, who will retire on 31 March 2014.  Takru at the time of appoinment was serving the Financial Services Department as its Secretary under the Union Finance Ministry.

  • Soma Mondal on 12 March 2014 was appointed as the first woman director (commercial) of Navratna Public Sector Unit (PSU) National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO). Mondal joined Nalco in 1984 as a Graduate Engineer Trainee.


RESIGNATIONS/RETIREMENTS



  • Justice KT Thomas quits as head of Lokpal search committee.

  • GK Pillai resigned as Chairman of MCX-SX on 14 March 2014. Consequently, current Vice Chairman and former LIC Chairman, Thomas Mathew T was elected as new Chairman and Ashima Goyal was elected as Vice Chairperson by the Board members.  The exchange also announced that MCX and FTIL had been reclassified as Public Shareholder from Promoter Shareholder

  • Graeme Smith, the South African cricket team Captain on 4 March 2014 announced that he will retire from international cricket at the end of the test match against Australia at Newlands. Smith is the longest serving captain for South Africa in international cricket.

  • Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Apple Inc Peter Oppenheimer announced his retirement on 4 March 2014. He planned to retire at the end of September 2014.

  • Cipla’s Hamied retires as Executive Vice-Chairman. Cipla also announced the elevation of Rajesh Garg as Executive Director and Global Chief Financial Officer, besides being appointed as an Additional Director and Whole-time Director of the company from April 1.

  • Managing Director (MD) of Britannia Industries Vinita Bali on 25 March 2014 announced to retire till the end of March 2014. Britannia Industries is a part of the Wadia Group.

  • The acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Jet Airways Ravishankar Gopalakrishnan resigned on 25 March 2014. Gopalakrishnan took over as acting CEO in January 2014 after Garry Kenneth Toomey resignation.Presently - Garry Kenneth Toomey.

  • Dr KC Chakrabarty, the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India resigned on 20 March 2014. His resignation came three months ahead of the completion of his term due to personal reasons

  • Nandan Nilekani resigned as chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on 13 March 2014. Nilekani joined the Congress Party on 10 March 2014 and he is contesting from the Bangalore South constituency in Lok Sabha polls. Nandan Nilekani, Co-founder of Infosys left the company in 2007 and he had taken charges as head of UIDAI, Aadhar programme.

  • Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, the Army Chief of Egypt resigned on 26 March 2014 to contest in Presidential election. His resignation from the highest post of military came, nine months after toppling Egypt’s first democratically-elected President, Mohammad Morsi.

  • Nancy Powell resigned as the US Ambassador to India.




OBITUARIES



  • Bhuvnesh Chaturvedi, the former Union Minister died on 2 March 2014 at a private heart hospital in Kota after protracted illness. He died at the age of 85.

  • Joe McGinniss, an author of nonfiction and novels died on 10 March 2014 at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. He died at the age of 71 due to prostate cancer.

  • Former Sierra Leone President, Ahmad Tejan Kabbah died.

  • T C Teli, former Arunachal Pradesh Minister died.

  • Noted author and journalist Khushwant Singh died at the age of 99.

  • Former Brazilian international footballer Hilderaldo Luiz Bellini died on 21 March 2014 after a heart attack. He was 83. He was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for many years

  • Adolfo Suarez, the first elected Prime Minister of Spain died on 23 March 2014. He was 81. He was suffering from Alzheimer's disease for the past decade.

  • Veteran film actress of Hindi and Marathi films, Nanda died on 25 March 2014 in Mumbai at the age of 75.

  • Bhuvnesh Chaturvedi, the Ex-Union minister died.

  • Frank Jobe pioneer of Tommy John surgery died.

  • Veteran Actress, Sheila MacRae died at 92.


AWARDS



  • Chandi Prasad Bhatt, the noted Gandhian environmentalist and social activist won the Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2013 on 28 February 2014.

  • Corporation Bank has bagged the awards for lending to MSE (micro and small enterprises) and to micro enterprises from the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) for 2012-13.

  • Gyan Correa bagged the Gollapudi Srinivas National Award 2013.

  • Michelle Obama to honour acid attack victim Laxmi.Laxmi, a victim of acid attack has been selected by the US for the prestigious International Women of Courage Award.

  • Indian Writer Pankaj Mishra won Windham Campbell Literature Prize 2014.Award-winning Indian author Pankaj Mishra is among eight writers from seven countries who have won a $1,50,000 Yale University prize each in recognition of their literary achievements.

  • Tomas Halik, the Czech priest won the Templeton Prize for 2014. The award was announced by the John Templeton Foundation on 13 March 2014 and under the award he will receive 1.1 million Euro.

  • Ekhon Nedekha Nadir Xipaare won audience choice award in North Carolina film festival.

  • President Conferred Stree Shakti Puruskar 2013.

  • Indian Journalist Shubranshu Choudhary won digital Activism Award 2014.



SPORTS



  • Roger Federer on 1 March 2014 won singles title of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship by defeating Tomas Berdych 3-6, 6-4,6-3 in the final. This is the sixth title win in past 12 years for Federer in Dubai and is also the 78th career title.

  • Indian shuttler, Arvind Bhat won the men’s singles German Open Grand Prix title against Danish Hans-Kristian Vittinghus 24-22 19-21 21-11  in Mulheim an der Ruhr, Germany on 3 March 2014. Bhat ranked 87th in the world, became the first Indian to win this tournament. Pullela Gopichand is the Indian shuttler, who reached the finals of the Germany Open Grand Prix in 1999 and lost the finals.

  • Heena Sidhu won silver medal in 10m Air Pistol Women final of ISSF World Cup.

  • South Africa on 1 March 2014 emerged as the winner of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2014 by defeating two-time former champions Pakistan by six wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. With this win South Africa captured the ICC Junior World Cup for the first time.

  • Physicist Rajesh Gopakumar selected for G D Birla Award 2013.

  • Malala and Mishab-ul-Haq conferred with Pakistan Civil Awards on Pakistan Day.

  • Govind Mishra, the Hindi writer selected for Saraswati Samman 2013.

  • Jaswant Singh, former minister in the NDA government released a book entitled India at Risk – Mistakes, Misconceptions and Misadventures of security policy on 3 March 2014.

  • Hamid Ansari, the Vice President of India on 28 February 2014 released a book entitled Akbar, The Aesthete in New Delhi. Dr. Indu Anand, an acclaimed educationist & Principal, Janki Devi Memorial College is the author of the book.
