APPOINTMENTS

  • Manuel Valls named as new French prime minister. President Francois Hollande named former Interior Minister Manuel Valls as France's new prime minister.

  • Noel Naval Tata, brother-in-law of Tata group Chairman Cyrus Mistry, has taken over as the chairman of retail firm Trent, succeeding FK Kavarana who retired from the Tata group companies after attaining the age of 70 this month.

  • Sajiv K Menon has taken charge as the Managing Director of the Kochi-based Nitta Gelatin India Ltd .

  • Michael Mayer has been appointed Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India. He will take over responsibility as the new brand head for Volkswagen passenger cars in India with effect from June 1.

  • Karnataka Bank has promoted nine of its Chief Managers as Assistant General Managers. The new appointees are Sunil P Garde, Rajkumar PH, Kalyani R Rao, Ramesh Bhat, Raja BS, Prakash Kumar, Sumana Ghate, Vishweshwara M, and Girish MR.

  • Daimler Trucks today announced top level management changes with Erich Nesselhauf set to take over as Managing Director and CEO at Daimler India Commercial Vehicles from June 1.

  • HR Mohan has taken over as the President of Computer Society of India from April 1.

  • R Gandhi was appointed as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on 3 April 2014 for a period of three years. His appointment came into effect from 3 April 2014. Before being elevated to the position of Deputy Governor, he was serving the Reserve Bank as its executive director.

  • Union Government on 2 April 2014 appointed senior IPS officer D K Pathak as the new Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF).

  • Election Commission of India (ECI) approved on 3 April 2014 the appointment of Suresh Arora as Directorate General of Police (DGP) of Punjab Police. Suresh Arora is a 1982 batch IPS officer.

  • C Padmakumar has been appointed the Chairman and Managing Director of Terumo Penpol, a Thiruvananthapuram-based manufacturer of blood bags and medical devices.

  • Marie-Lousie Coleiro Preca was sworn-in as the President of Malta on 4 April 2014 in Valletta, Malta.  She was named as President after being suggested by the Prime Minister,Joseph Muscat and approved by Parliament. Coleiro replaced George Abela from Labour Party whose term completed on 4 April 2014.

  • The Indian Staffing Federation, an apex body of flexi staffing industry, has appointed Rituparna Chakraborty as its President and Raja Sekhar Reddy as the Vice–President for a period of two years.

  • Amara Raja Batteries Ltd has informed the BSE that the audit committee and the board at their respective meetings to approved the appointment of S.V. Raghavendra as Chief Financial Officer of the company effective from April 8, 2014.

  • Ravi Chauhan on 7 April 2014 was appointed as Managing Director for SAP India. He will take the charge immediately. He will report directly to Adaire Fox-Martin, President of SAP Asia Pacific Japan.

  • India Infoline Asset Management Company today appointed Prashasta Seth as its Chief Executive. Seth has over 14 years of experience and has been with the IIFL Group for the past six years.

  • NetApp has appointed Jay Bhow as vice president of Engineering.

  • Instant messaging and voice application Viber appointed Mark Hardy as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO).

  • R Chandrasekaran, Executive Vice-Chairman of Cognizant India, is taking over as Chairman of software industry body Nasscom from Krishnakumar Natarajan, CEO and MD of Mindtree. Nasscom’s Executive Council appointed BVR Mohan Reddy, Founder, Chairman and Managing Director of Infotech Enterprises, as Vice-Chairman.

  • R Radhakrishnan has taken over as General Manager (commercial) of Air India Southern Region.

  • The Interim president of BCCI-IPL Sunil Gavaskar appointed Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) chairman Deepak Parekh as his special advisor for the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League.

  • President of India on 11 April 2014 appointed Justice Rajendra Mal Lodha as Next Chief Justice of India. Justice Lodha will take his charge from 27 April 2014. He will be the 41st Chief Justice of India. He will succeed Justice P. Sathasivam.

  • President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Ms. Justice G. Rohini, senior-most Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court the first woman Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Justice Rohini will be the 10th woman judge in the Delhi High Court.

  • Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram has been designated as new Finance Secretary.  The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved a proposal to designate Arvind Mayaram as the new Finance Secretary on 15 April 2014.

  • Vice Admiral Robin K Dhowan likely to take over as next Navy Chief.

  • Network18 Digital, the digital content arm of Network18, has elevated Durga Raghunath to CEO.

  • Tata AIA Life Insurance Company has announced the appointment of Vishal Kumar Bandlish as Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

  • Bharti Airtel has appointed Abhay Savargaonkar as its Chief Technology Officer for India operations.

  • Anand Mahindra, Ellen Lord and Banmali Agrawal were appointed as board members of the US India Business Council (USIBC).

  • G Gopalakrishna has taken charge as Director, Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning (CAFRAL).

  • Lupin appoints Stevens as chief corporate development officer. Drug major Lupin announced the appointment of Theresa Stevens as Chief Corporate Development Officer for its global operations.

  • Hinduja Ventures Ltd (HVL), a Hinduja Group company, has appointed Amar Chintopanth as Group CFO, Media, of HVL. He will report to Tony D’silva, Group CEO-Media, HVL and CEO of IndusInd Media and Communications Ltd (IMCL).

  • 3M India Ltd has appointed Sameer Agarwal as the new Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The company, in a release to the stock exchanges, said a decision to this effect was taken at the Board of Directors meeting held on April 18.

  • FinMin appoints Ila Patnaik as Principal Economic Advisor. Centre has appointed columnist and RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, Ila Patnaik, as Principal Economic Advisor, a post that had been vacant since November 2013.

  • Makoto Kitai has been appointed the new Managing Director of Mitsubishi Electric India.

  • Ryan Giggs named as interim Manchester United manager having earlier is David Moyes. Giggs, who has spent his whole Life career at Old Trafford, He is responsible for the first team until a permanent appointment can be made.

  • Grant Thornton in India has appointed Vidya Rajarao as Partner to head the firm’s forensic services practice.

  • Union Ministry of External Affairs (MoEA) on 23 April 2014 appointed Suresh Kumar Reddy as India's first Ambassador to the separate Indian Mission to Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) & East Asia Summit.

  • Japanese foods firm/Company Nissin Foods on 23 April 2014 appointed Gautam Sharma as the Managing Director (MD) of its Indian arm Indo Nissin. He succeeds Yuji Tabeta. Yuji Tabeta was promoted to a senior role.

  • Baroda Pioneer Asset Management Company Limited (Baroda Pioneer AMC) has announced the appointment of Mahmood Basha as Head of Sales.

  • Jeremy Pearson has been appointed Managing Director, Tenant Advisory Group (TAG), Asia-Pacific, of global real estate consultancy Cushman & Wakefield.

  • Lt Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag's name forwarded for new Army chief.

  • Walmart Stores Inc announced that it is promoting its Asia head Scott Price to an international role to be based in Bentonville headquarters and Walmart China head Greg Foran will replace Price as the new chief executive for Asia.

  • Justice RM Lodha was sworn in as the chief justice of India. He was administered the oath of office by President Pranab Mukherjee.

  • Nokia appointed India-born Rajeev Suri as its President and CEO.

 RESIGNATIONS/RETIREMENTS

  • US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell resigned , paving the way for a political appointee to repair bilateral ties ruptured by the handcuffing and strip search of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade in New York last December.

  • Ex-Australia test batsman Marcus North says he will retire from first-class cricket to pursue wine industry business interests in Britain and to play limited stints in English county cricket.

  • AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes ‎wants to quit Twitter, as he thinks he is spending too much time in this social media.

  • Popular Urdu daily Siasat’s Editor Zahed Ali Khan formally quit the Telugu Desam Party, protesting its tie-up with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

  • One of the pioneers behind the iPhone, software engineer Greg Christie, is leaving Apple.

  • Vivek Gundotra, chief of Google’s social networking venture Google+, is leaving the Internet company after nearly eight years.

  • South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hong-won announced his resignation over the government response to the ferry disaster.

OBITUARIES

  • Former President of Guinea Kumba Yala died at the age of 61 due to cardiac arrest on 4 April 2014. Kumba was elected civilian President of Guinea in 2001 and ruled the country till 2003.

  • Writer-environmentalist Peter Matthiessen dies.Peter Matthiessen, a rich man’s son who rejected a life of ease in favour of physical and spiritual challenges and produced such acclaimed works as The Snow Leopard and At Play in the Fields of the Lord, died Saturday. He was 86.

  • Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Anja Niedringhaus on 4 April 2014 shot dead by a policeman in Afghanistan. She was 48. She was killed while covering the 2014 presidential election in Afghanistan.

  • Mickey Rooney, an American film actor and entertainer died on 7 April 2014. He died in California at the age of 93.

  • Ashish Bose, veteran demographer, 83, died in New Delhi due to illness on 7 April 2014. Asish Bose was best known for coining the term BIMARU in one page of research paper to then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.

  • VK Murthy, the renowned cinematographer and Dada Saheb Phalke awardee died on 7 April 2014 at his residence in Shankarapuram. He was 91 and was famous for his camera work in Guru Dutt’s classics like Pyaasa and Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam.

  • WWE Hall of Fame, wrestling legend Ultimate Warrior died at the age of 54 after collapsing in front of his hotel room in Arizona.

  • Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the Nobel laureate whose intoxicating novels and short stories exposed millions outside Latin America to its passions, superstition, violence and social inequality, has died at home in Mexico City. He was 87.

  • The hero of the NASA’s Apollo Program John C. Houbolt died on 20 April 2014 after the complications from Parkinson's disease. He was 95.

  • Former American middleweight boxer, Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter died on 20 April 2014 at his home in Toronto, Canada following a battle with prostate cancer. He was 76.

  • Veteran pro-democratic Journalist of Myanmar Win Tin on 19 April 2014 died due to his respiratory problems. He was 85.

  • Canadian author Alistair MacLeod on 20 April 2014 died due to a heart stroke. He was 77. He was well  known for his short story collections and novel No Great Mischief.

  • The world’s oldest man has died in Italy at the age of 111, just days before celebrating his 112th birthday, Guinness World Records said. Arturo Licata was awarded the Guinness World Records title of oldest living man on February 28, 2014 at the age of 111 years and 302 days.

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) on 3 April 2014 recieved the Most Efficient Navratna  Award for the year 2013. It received the award at the 5th Dalal Street Investment Journal Awards ceremony held in New Delhi. The award was collected by the Chairman of HAL, Dr. R K Tyagi.

  • Mahendra Singh Dhoni gets 2014 Asian award. In 2013, Dhoni became the first captain to win all the three ICC trophies. Dhoni was ranked 16th on the Forbes list of highest paid athletes.

  • Pulitzer Prize-winning Indian American novelist Jhumpa Lahiri's "Lowland" has been shortlisted for this year's Baileys Prize, the UK's only annual book award for fiction written by a woman.

  • Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company Private Ltd and Woodbriar Group of companies have won six awards each at the tenth edition of The Golden Leaf India Award: Southern Tea Competition (TGLIA: STC) held at Dubai.

  • Ratan Tata gets one of Britain's highest awards - Ratan Tata, former chairman of the Tata Group that has a large presence in Britain, is to be honoured by Queen Elizabeth with a GBE (Knight Grand Cross), which is one of the highest civilian honours in Britain.

  • British scientist Prof Stuart Parkin has won the 2014 Millennium technology prize worth €1m (£824,400) for research that has led to a phenomenal increase in the storage capacity of digital devices and heralded the era of cloud computing.

  • British-American physicist Stuart Parkin won Millennium Technology Prize 2014 for discoveries leading to a thousand-fold increase in digital data storage on magnetic disks. The Prize is worth of 1 million euro and it was announced by the Technology Academy Finland in Finland on 9 April 2014.

  • Gulzar, best known for penning memorable hits like ‘Tujhse Naaraaz Nahi’ and ‘Tere Bina Zindagi Se’ besides directing critically acclaimed films like ’Aandhi’ and ‘Mausam’, was today chosen for the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award, the highest official recognition for film personalities in India.

  • India-born poet Vijay Seshadri has won the prestigious 2014 Pulitzer Prize in the poetry category for his collection of poems "3 Sections."

  • Ogilvy Mumbai has won two YoungGun awards in the YGA 2013 Awards. The agency is the only office in India to have won YoungGuns awards. YGA is now in its 12th year of recognising young talent globally. The agency’s CleftToSmile logo won the award in the general graphic design category. For their second award, the agency had rolled out a unique campaign for Akanksha, a non-government organisation, which needed teachers, but did not have funds for advertising.

  • Ship of Theseus’ named best film at National film awards. .Anand Gandhi’s debut film Ship of Theseus was named the best feature film while Milkha Singh’s biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was declared the best popular film providing wholesome entertainment at the 61st National Film Awards.More details about Filmfare Awards at last page.

  • Microsoft wins most attractive employer award. Microsoft emerged as the winner for the fourth year. Sony India was the runner-up. The Randstad Award 2014 event was at New Delhi. Special recognition awards were won by Larsen & Toubro in the infrastructure sector, State Bank of India (SBI) in the banking sector, Taj Group of Hotels in the hospitality sector and Tata Power in the energy sector.

  • Stark Communications has been chosen ‘Agency of the Year’ at the Pepper Creative Awards 2014 hosted jointly by The Advertising Club Cochin and Pepper Creative Awards Trust. Its tally included one gold, six silvers, seven bronzes and seven finals.

  • Mathangi Sathyamurthy, Karnataka musician was selected for M S Subbulakshmi Award 2014. It was announced by the M S Subbulakshmi Foundation on 19 April 2014. She will receive a cash award of 10001 rupees and a plaque.

  • President Pranab Mukherjee on 26 April presented Padma awards to 56 distinguished personalities including actor Paresh Rawal, ace tennis player Leander Paes and author Ruskin Bond. Cricketer Yuvraj Singh, eminent writer Anita Desai and noted painter Sunil Das could not make it to the ceremony.

  • Indian Squash Player Saurav Ghosal won Dato Alex Lee Award 2013 on 24 April 2014. He was selected for the award by the Asian Squash Federation (ASF) for being the Outstanding Asian Men's Player of the Year 2013.

  • Infosys Executive Chairman N R Narayana Murthy was presented with the 2014 "Canada India Foundation Chanchalani Global Indian Award" here for his remarkable vision and leadership in the IT sector.

  • Indian environment activist Ramesh Agrawal has been announced as the winner of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize, and will accept the award at a lavish ceremony at the San Francisco Opera House.

  • Paralympic swimmer Sharath Gayakwad won two Bronze and one Silver at the IDM Berlin 2014.

  • India stood one win away from securing a berth in the World Group play-offs after Rohan Bopanna and Saketh Myneni defeated Hyung-Taik Lee and Lim Yong-Kyu in the crucial doubles match of their second round Asia/Oceania Group I tie against Korea

  • India drop to 2nd but Kohli, Ashwin rise in ICC rankings.India lost their number one status to Sri Lanka after being defeated in the World Twenty20 final but star batsman Virat Kohli and spinner R Ashwin today attained career—high positions of second and third respectively in the latest ICC rankings.

  • Lee Chong Wei & Shixian Wang won India Super Series Badminton titles.

  • Australian women cricket team on 6 April 2014 won the Women’s World Twenty20 Cup 2014 cup defeating England in the final match in Mirpur, Dhaka.

  • Iwao Hakamada, the Japanese boxer on 6 April 2014 was awarded with an honorary championship belt by World Boxing Council (WBC). Hakamada was freed from death row on 27 March 2014 after 48 years in prison following a murder conviction.

  • Punjab on 6 April 2014 won the 4th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2014 (Division A) by defeating Hockey Odisha 6-2 in the finals at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. With this win, Punjab had retained the championship title.

  • Sri Lankan cricket team on 6 April 2014 won the ICC Twenty20 World Cup 2014 title after defeating Indian cricket team by six wickets in the final match at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur, Dhaka.

  • Heena Sindhu, the Indian shooter on 7 April 2014 clinched the World’s Number One spot in 10 meters air pistol event. By achieving this fete, she became the first Indian pistol shooter to be ranked at the top position in the list.

  • India's swashbuckling opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been named as one of the Five Cricketers of the Year, an honour dating back to 1889, by Wisden for his performance in 2013.

  • Andrea Petkovic of Germany on 6 April 2014 won her first WTA title in last three years at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, United States.

  • Sachin Tendulkar adorns cover of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. .Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who quit international cricket last year after an illustrious 24-year long career, adorned the covers of the 151st edition of the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack.

  • Sandhu wins gold at Shotgun World Cup.Indian shooter Manavjit Singh Sandhu bagged the gold in the trap event by overcoming Australia's two-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Diamond at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup here.

  • Tendulkar, Ganguly foray into football, win Indian Super League bids.Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly were among the host of high-profile winning bidders as the organisers of the much-anticipated Indian Super League today unveiled the eight franchises for the event that is set to take Indian football by storm.

  • World record-holder Wilson Kipsang won the men's London Marathon in a course-record two hours, four minutes and 29 seconds on Monday (AEST) as Britain's Mo Farah found life tough on his debut over the distance.

  • Santoso shocks Lee to win OUE Singapore Open. Indonesia’s Simon Santoso pulled off an upset victory over world No 1 Lee Chong Wei to clinch the US$300,000 OUE Singapore Open badminton championships (Apr 13). Santoso, who has beaten the Malaysian star, a two-time Olympic silver medallist, just once in 10 previous meetings, won 21-15, 21-10 to claim the US$22,500 men’s singles winner’s cheque at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

  • Gaurav Gill won Vinz Whangarei Car Rally.India’s Gaurav Gill and Australian based co-driver Glenn Macneall clean swept today’s six special stages concluding the 2014 VINZ International Rally of Whangarei – snatching victory from overnight leader and team mate Jan Kopecký.

  • Indian judokas dominated and notched up an impressive haul of 10 gold, a silver and a bronze medal at the seventh South Asia Judo Championships held in Kathmandu.

  • Shaik Abdul Hameed of India won the 2014 Thailand Tour title of Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) on 19 April 2014 at Blu-O Rhythm & Bowl Ratchayothinon in Bangkok, Thailand. With this Hameed became the first Indian to win the title of ABF.

  • Stanislas Wawrinka on 20 April 2014 won the men's single Monte Carlo Masters Tennis title by defeating former world number one Roger Federer, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2. With this, the 29-year-old Wawrinka has won his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title.

  • Meb Keflezighi on 21 April 2014 became the first United States male athlete to win the Boston Marathon in three decades (since 1983).

  • Donna Vekic of Croatia won the BMW Malaysian Open 2014 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 20 April 2014. The win made Donna Vekic richer by 43000 dollars. BMW Malaysian Open 2014 was held from 14 to 20 April 2014.

  • Chitra Magimairaj of India won the World Women’s Senior Snooker Championship on 22 April 2014 at Leeds, Britain. She played the final match against Alena Asmolava of Belarus.

  • Bengaluru FC crowned champions on I-League debut.First-timers Bengaluru FC wrote a new chapter in Indian football by clinching the I-League title in their debut season courtesy a 4-2 away win over Dempo Sports Club here, with captain Sunil Chhetri fittingly netting the final goal.

  • Controversial Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was named the English Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) player of the year.

  • Grand Master Adhiban won silver medal at the Asian Continental Chess Championship held in Sharjah on 26 April 2014. With this silver he got an entry in the World Chess Cup 2015 that will be held at Baku, Azerbaijan.

  • Members of the Indian women’s hockey team, Poonam Rani and Chanchan Devi have achieved the rare feat of featuring in 100 international games for the country.
